AT LOXTONIA THEY SPEAK APPLE
Just as important as terroir is when making wine, with cider it’s all about the apples – where they come from, where you make it, who makes it, how you make it and your very reason for making it in the first place.
The journey of the apple begins in September/October when tiny little blossoms form on the trees. From February right through to June, it’s time to start harvesting these apple cultivars, selecting the juiciest fruit for pressing!
The picking team are also able to select specific varieties from specific sections of the farm, from a specific age of trees – which makes each flavour incredibly unique.
“We’ve been working with these apples on the farm for more than 28 years – we grow them, love them and look after them in the best possible ways,” says Kobus Koegelenberg, the Loxtonia Farm Manager.
FROM ORCHARD TO BOTTLE: THE ENVIRONMENT A FRIEND
Loxtonia Ciders are free from preservatives, artificial additives and are made from hand-picked apples which are freshly pressed and naturally fermented. The ciders are a great expression of what the Whitfield family stands for – consciously created ciders, made in a sustainable and an environmentally friendly manner and bottled with heart.
The farm’s green energy solar system was implemented in 2016 and today there are 400 solar panels on the roof of the cidery. Each panel weighs 27kg and are each faced in a true north direction, maximising the sun’s energy. The whole system can produce 100 kilowatts of energy. Want to know the best part?
